Is the Pandemic Really Over? Spike Protein's Long-Term Impact on Brain Health With Dr. Mobeen Syed

Have you been wondering what the culprit is behind so many cases of dementia? The answer might surprise you.

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Mobeen Syed (aka Dr. Been), a leading expert in the field of viral neuroinflammation, to dive deep into how the novel coronavirus, even in its mildest form, can lead to cognitive issues, accelerate dementia, and damage brain function.

Dr. Syed explains how SARS-CoV-2 and its spike protein can impact the brain in ways we’re still uncovering. We discuss the effects of post-viral syndrome, even in asymptomatic individuals, and how brain inflammation might be a silent, growing problem following infection.

Tune in to learn how to protect your brain and prevent long-term cognitive damage.

“Yes, the pandemic is kind of over, but not really fully over. The virus is still impacting people, and we may still be getting asymptomatic infections.”

Is the Pandemic Really Over? The Alarming Link Between Spike Protein and Brain Inflammation

Are brain fog, memory lapses, or unexplained anxiety your new normal? You’re not alone—and the culprit might be closer than you think. Even long after recovering from COVID-19, many people are discovering that the spike protein—the notorious signature of the virus—continues to wreak havoc, especially on the brain.

In this eye-opening conversation between Dr. Josh Helman and Dr. Mobeen Syed (aka “Dr. Been”), we dig into the overlooked connection between spike protein and brain inflammation—and what it means for long-term cognitive health. From newly published studies to practical lab testing, you’ll learn why the pandemic’s impact may be far from over.

🎯 Key Takeaways From the Episode:

    • Spike protein—whether from infection or mRNA vaccine—can persist in the blood and brain for months, triggering inflammation and cognitive decline (14:47).

    • Brain shrinkage and loss of gray matter have been documented in COVID-19 survivors—even those with only mild symptoms (18:02).

    • The hippocampus, key to memory and cognition, suffers when inflamed, reducing neurogenesis and accelerating dementia (11:22).

    • Tests like TNF-alpha, IL-6, and PET brain scans can reveal spike protein-related inflammation, even when CRP is normal (57:09).

🧠 Spike Protein and Brain Inflammation: What the Latest Research Shows

    1. Spike Protein Isn’t Gone—It’s Hiding

Dr. Mobeen explains that the synthetic spike protein from mRNA vaccines has been found in blood samples up to six months post-vaccination. This isn’t fringe science—it comes from mainstream studies published in 2023 and 2024. Even more surprising? This spike can cross the blood-brain barrier, infiltrating areas like the hippocampus and frontal lobe—key regions for memory, emotion, and decision-making.

“Whether the spike comes from the virus or the vaccine, the common factor is inflammation,” says Dr. Been.

Once in the bloodstream, the spike travels via immune system messengers like exosomes, potentially triggering widespread neurological effects.

    2. COVID-19 Causes Measurable Brain Shrinkage

Oxford-led studies, referenced by Dr. Been, showed up to 5% brain tissue loss in just one year—even among younger individuals with mild COVID cases. Areas hit hardest? The orbitofrontal cortex and olfactory-related brain regions, which govern smell, memory, and emotional regulation. Worse still, these changes were also accompanied by cognitive decline in under 141 days.

This evidence challenges the notion that brain fog or forgetfulness post-COVID is just “in your head.”

    3. Inflammation Starves the Brain of New Neurons

Your hippocampus makes 500 new neurons every day. But when inflamed—by TNF-alpha, IL-6, or even systemic inflammation—that regeneration halts. The result? Accelerated aging of the brain, memory loss, and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Even more concerning, some spike protein-related inflammation doesn’t show up on standard CRP blood tests, meaning many cases could be missed without deeper lab work.

“Just inflammation is enough to start cognitive decline,” warns Dr. Been.

🧪 What Can You Do? Tests That May Reveal Hidden Brain Inflammation

If you or a loved one is experiencing new or worsening neurological symptoms, it might be time to investigate:

    1. Spike Protein Test – Detect lingering spike protein in the blood.

    2. Inflammation Markers – Test for TNF-alpha, IL-6, and high-sensitivity CRP.

    3. PET or fMRI Brain Imaging – Look for reduced activity or shrinkage in critical brain areas.

    4. Cognitive Assessments – Baseline memory and processing speed tests can track changes over time.

While more research is ongoing, Dr. Been also points to studies showing that certain post-COVID patients experienced autoimmune activity, myelin sheath damage (as seen in MS), and cerebellar ataxia—conditions that affect movement and coordination.

Conclusion: 🌍 The Pandemic’s Shadow Still Lingers

Even as the world “moves on” from COVID-19, many people are unknowingly carrying its most dangerous residue: long-lasting brain inflammation caused by spike protein. And it’s not just about memory. It’s about quality of life, independence, and the ability to think clearly as we age.

Dr. Josh Helman and Dr. Mobeen Syed make it clear: we can’t afford to ignore the brain when it comes to post-COVID care. Whether the source is the virus or the vaccine, spike protein has demonstrated the ability to alter brain structure and function in ways we’re only beginning to understand.

    1. My son , George Loughrin, has been experiencing chronic progressive headaches with worsening insomnia, that now is causing anxiety and even depression or mood control. He is still working in a demanding job as a biological lab tech. but trying to take Chem. classes is very challenging as he is for the first time having a harder time in juggling all the demands with sometimes very little sleep. He now relates there is always a constant pain with the nasaids giving him some lower levels of pain. He experienced his first migraine when he took the J and J shot in April of 2021. He also said he had a strange metallic taste for a day. I didn’t develop symptoms till many weeks later of tingling and numbness in hands , fuzzzy vision in one eye, then swelling and pain in right sided joints. Later diagnosed with R.A. and Sojourn disease. We have tried to get a referral to no avail and he is desperate for someone to take him seriously. The latest Dr. saw him briefly and is suggesting Trazadone. I keep trying to tell my son at this point I want him to try a Functional or Osteopathic Dr. as the symptoms began upon the COVID shot. He also broke out in hives for first time and antihistamine instantly reversed it. He now has what appears to look like Raynauds Phenomenon. My Autoimmune specialist believes he may be suffering from a new autoimmune disease but needs a referral in order to test him. It has been 2 years and no one will refer him. I am afraid they are waiting for him to have an accident as he barely stays awake during day yet is hyper alert upon waking at nite. He said he thinks he can’t deep sleep anymore and multitasking has become more difficult. One P.A. told no one sleeps well anymore and just take 2 antihistamine at nite. He said he does sleep quicker but doesn’t feel any better and still can’t sleep more than 4-5 hours. He also is extremely tired and we have noticed he is dizzy and seems to have difficulty in maintains body temp. heart beat and possibly blood pressure regulation. As he was hoping to become a P.A. therefore he really is trying to find help within the current system but they aren’t listening, just rushing him in 10 minutes with a new sleep aid.
