Endothelial cells are far from passive. They produce anti inflammatory substances, regulate blood clotting, and secrete hormones like nitric oxide, which signals blood vessels to dilate and relax. Plaque buildup and vascular disease almost always begin with endothelial damage.

 

Sitting on top of the endothelial cells is a fragile, gel like barrier called the endothelial glycocalyx, often described as the Teflon coating of the cardiovascular system. This slippery layer keeps white blood cells, platelets, and cholesterol from sticking to and damaging the vessel wall. Unfortunately, the glycocalyx is highly sensitive and degrades naturally with age, and it is rapidly destroyed by high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, and poor nutrition, particularly diets high in sugar and processed carbohydrates.

 

For years, doctors did not even know the glycocalyx existed, since the chemical reagents used to prepare microscope slides would dissolve it. Today, a technology called GlycoCheck allows clinicians to place a specialized camera under the tongue to visualize the glycocalyx and red blood cell flow in real time, identifying microvascular damage years, or even decades, before a major blockage or stroke occurs.

 

Vascular Tests for Alzheimer’s Risk

 

Traditional medicine often waits until a patient has a severe blockage in the carotid artery before intervening. A functional medicine approach uses advanced diagnostics to catch dysfunction at its earliest, most treatable stages.
