Alzheimer's & Dementia
My mother/father was just diagnosed with dementia. What should we do first and now?
The first step is to understand that dementia is not a one-way street. Schedule a consultation to identify the underlying [often hidden] causes—this might include testing for mold toxicity, parasites, heavy metals, other infections, industrial toxins, forever chemicals, personal genetics, and metabolic issues. Early intervention with the right protocol can make a significant difference.
Can you help with early-stage or MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment)?
Absolutely. Early intervention often yields the best results. MCI is an ideal time to implement comprehensive lifestyle changes, address root causes, and prevent progression to more advanced stages.
My family member has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and is on a specific treatment protocol already. Should they continue it?
This is something to discuss in a consultation. Dr. Josh focuses on addressing root causes rather than just managing symptoms, but medication decisions should be made carefully with proper medical oversight.
I have the APOE4 gene. Will I get Alzheimer's?
Not Necessarily. While APOE4 increases risk, genetics are not destiny. Lifestyle factors, diet, toxin exposure, and addressing root causes play enormous roles. Many people with APOE4 never develop Alzheimer’s when they take preventive action. In fact, if you take the correct actions you can eliminate the excess risk. Also, APOE is not the only gene responsible for Alzheimer’s risk. There are over 100 others that we can analyze for you, if you work with Dr. Josh.
Can you help with other forms of dementia like Lewy Body, Frontal Temporal Dementia [FTD], Parkinson’s or vascular dementia?
Yes. While protocols may vary slightly, the root cause approach applies to all forms of cognitive decline—addressing inflammation, infections, toxins, and metabolic dysfunction.
Can you help with other Neurologic conditions like Multiple Sclerosis or ALS?
Yes
Root Causes & Testing
What are the main root causes of Alzheimer's that you address?
Dr. Josh’s approach targets multiple root causes, including: –
- Infections: Parasites, mold/mycotoxins, Lyme, viruses
- Toxins: Heavy metals (mercury, aluminum, lead) –
- Metabolic: Nutritional deficiencies, hormone imbalances
- Inflammation: Chronic inflammation and gut dysfunction
- Genetics: Personal genetic factors
What kind of testing do you recommend?
Testing typically includes comprehensive assessments for mold toxicity, heavy metals, gut health (microbiome, parasites), nutrient deficiencies, hormone levels, and inflammatory markers. Specific tests like Vibrant Wellness panels, Personal Genetics, GI mapping, and toxicity screenings are commonly used.
How do parasites relate to brain health and Alzheimer's?
Parasites can create chronic inflammation, compete for nutrients, release toxins, and directly affect brain function. Many people with cognitive decline have undiagnosed parasitic or other infections that need to be addressed as part of comprehensive treatment.
Can mold really cause dementia-like symptoms?
Absolutely. Mold toxicity (mycotoxins) can cause significant cognitive impairment, memory loss, brain fog, and symptoms that mimic Alzheimer’s. The good news is that when mold is the primary cause, symptoms often improve dramatically with proper treatment.
What about heavy metals? How do they affect the brain?
Heavy metals like mercury (from dental amalgams and fish), aluminum [technically not heavy, but a toxic metal], and lead are neurotoxic and can accumulate in brain tissue, contributing to neurodegeneration. Proper testing and chelation protocols are essential parts of treatment.
Diet & Lifestyle
Do I need to be vegan to work with you?
While Dr. Josh advocates strongly for a whole-food, plant-based diet based on its benefits for brain health and overall wellness, each patient’s protocol is individualized. The focus is on eliminating inflammatory foods and emphasizing nutrient-dense, plant-based options.
What role does diet play in reversing Alzheimer's?
Diet is fundamental. A whole-food, plant-based diet reduces inflammation, provides essential nutrients, supports gut health, and helps eliminate toxins. It’s one of the most powerful tools for both prevention and reversal.
What supplements do you like for everyday health?
Common recommendations may include: magnesium, omega-3s (DHA/EPA), B-complex vitamins, glutathione or glutathione precursors, Lion’s Mane mushroom, antioxidants, and targeted nutrients based on individual deficiencies and genetics. Nitric Oxide supplements are also frequently recommended for cardiovascular and brain support.
What is glutathione and why is it important?
Glutathione is the body’s master antioxidant, critical for detoxification and protecting brain cells from damage. Many people with cognitive decline have depleted glutathione levels. Supporting glutathione production is often a key part of the protocol.
Specific Conditions & Concerns
Can you help with brain fog and memory issues even without a dementia diagnosis?
Yes. Brain fog, memory problems, and cognitive decline exist on a spectrum. Addressing root causes early can prevent progression and restore optimal brain function.
I have multiple health conditions (diabetes, autoimmune disease, etc.). Can you still help?
Yes. Many conditions share common root causes—inflammation, toxicity, infections, and metabolic dysfunction. A comprehensive approach often improves multiple conditions simultaneously.
Can you help with post-stroke or post-concussion cognitive issues?
While the initial injury differs, the healing process involves many of the same principles: reducing inflammation, supporting detoxification, optimizing nutrition, and promoting neuroplasticity and regeneration.
What about sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome—do these affect brain health?
Absolutely. Sleep disorders significantly impact brain health and can accelerate cognitive decline. Addressing sleep quality is an important part of any comprehensive brain health protocol.
